3 Topwater Retrieves for Solent Bass
Portland Bill's first two hours of the flood are the sharpest window for evening Solent bass
Portland Bill and Chesil Beach concentrate bait and fish where the flood pushes along seams and white water edges. Anglers target the first 2–3 hours of the flood, casting to tide lines and drop-offs rather than into the fastest flow. Dusk into first dark brings bass into less than 10 ft of water.
Walk-the-dog works best on calm to light chop. Use a slim surface pencil or walking bait, short rhythmic rod twitches and a tight line to produce that side-to-side motion that bass can’t resist at low light.
Three quick topwater retrieves
Twitch-pause: give two to three sharp twitches then a brief pause; this lures follows and prompts a commit when bass track before striking. Fast-start, slow-finish: cast tight to rocks or surf edge, reel hard to wake the plug through the wash, then slow as it crosses the tide line to mimic an escaping bait.
Match gear to ground: slim pencil poppers and shallow plugs for the Race and surf, 4–7 inch paddletails or eel-style soft plastics on 15–30 g heads when fish won’t surface. Fish 20–30 lb braid with a 25–40 lb fluoro leader and finish with an FG or double-uni to handle rough chalk and ledges.
Strike indicators include a sudden stop, a splash or a bulge behind the plug and a change in cadence. Cast tight to seams and ledges at dusk and watch the surface — a silver bass boiling off Chesil is the cue to commit the next cast.
