Low, clear water on the River Test below Stockbridge and the Itchen at Winchester brings tight, technical fishing: best windows are pre‑dawn to 08:00 and the last hour before dusk into dark. Cooling evening seams and calmer margins concentrate caddis, spinners and small upwings; brown trout and the occasional grayling key on short, accurate presentation.
Where to fish and what’s up
On the Test focus Leckford and Marsh Court glides, tailouts and side‑eddies where spent spinners and caddis collect. At Winchester the broader glides and softer margins light up as water cools; repeated dimples and slow swirls are the usual cues for stalking.
Top patterns: balloon caddis and CDC caddis in tan, olive and grey, Parachute Adams 14–18, sherry or spent spinner patterns 16–20 and a black gnat for late feeds. A bead‑head red‑neck pheasant tail works as a drop‑back when dries are ignored.
Short‑line stalking
Fish 6–9 ft leaders with 5X-6X tippet; keep casts under 12 m and approach low, halting 10–15 m upstream of a rise. One controlled false cast or a reach mend only. Watch bank sipping and inside seams; place the fly just ahead and let it sink a touch.
