Portland Bill's Ledge — 06:00–09:00 first-light window
Portland Bill and the Solent side light up at first light when the flood slips in; the tightest bass and pollack runs sit in the slack into the early flood. Anglers heading to The Ledge or the Chesil shingle edge aim to be on station before sunrise, ready for the white-water trigger that turns fish on.
Best marks are The Ledge, the east side of the Bill along Chesil, the forts and blocks off Weymouth–Portland and the Overfalls. Bass favour broken tide lines and weed edges; pollack live around rock and ledge water at dawn. Local skippers read the tide and pick short drifts across the seam rather than broadside drifts into the race.
Lures are straightforward: hardbaits and soft plastics both pull their weight at first light, while live or dead sandeel will out-fish most offerings when tide-driven bait is present. Presentations must swim naturally; anglers often step up to heavier leads to hold bottom in the lateral pull but stop before snagging.
Small boat notes
Small-boat tactics favour a controlled drift or a short anchor spot. Keep the boat clear of the main race and weed lines, use short anchor positions where shelter allows, and use spot-lock or engine bursts to re-set across the seam. Tackle leans toward stout rods for bass, lighter single hooks for pollack and quick changes of sinker weight as the run eases.
Morning at Portland often looks like a bank of foam, tide ripping and bass hammering sandeel along the shoal.
