Portland Bill dawn: three quick topwater retrieves to trigger Solent bass
Portland Bill's eastern ledge is notorious; the last hour of flood pushes sandeels and sprats into seams where Solent bass hunt the surface. Local anglers start with a surface plug, move to a walk‑the‑dog if followed, then finish with a noisier retrieve when fish taunt but won't commit.
Gear and plugs
Carry a walking bait, a popper and a prop bait. Use quality braid tied to a short fluoro leader and a 7–9ft sea rod that gives soft lifts and quick twitches. Poppers and prop baits take 2–3 sharp twitches then a pause; the stop is the strike window more often than not.
Three retrieves
First: cast beyond the ripple, let the rings settle, then two short twitches and a dead pause to tempt a cautious bass. Second: when a fish trails, switch to a steady walk‑the‑dog with short rod pulses to make the plug glide side to side. Third: if gulls are working and bait is scattered, speed up into an aggressive, splashy retrieve to provoke a reaction strike.
Fish the last hour of flood into slack or the first push of the ebb and favour tide seams and broken water. A light onshore breeze that crimps the sea helps hide the approach; avoid launching from open points. Quiet launch spots such as Church Ope Bay or the lee of Chesil help keep anglers unseen. A bass blowing the surface beneath Portland's chalk at first light is the reward.
