April 2026 — Sea & Stillwater Fishing
April 2026 — Where to Fish While English Rivers Are Closed

With the coarse river close season running from 15 March to 15 June, April trips should prioritise sea and stillwater venues. Anglers must carry a valid Environment Agency rod licence for freshwater species and check local byelaws. Typical water temperatures in April are 6–10°C at sea in southern areas and 6–9°C in reservoirs; expect colder pockets over depth.
Sea targets and rigs
The English Channel and southern North Sea remain productive for sea bass, cod, pollack, mackerel and plaice. Shore marks such as Portland Bill, Dungeness and Penzance suit running ledger rigs with 2–4oz leads and fresh lugworm or ragworm; cod respond well to double-hook traces fished at 10–25m depths. Sabiki rigs or small feathers on light spinning gear work for shoaling mackerel at warming tides. Target incoming tides and dawn or dusk periods for best action.
Stillwater and reservoir tactics
Large stillwaters and gravel pits — Rutland Water, Grafham, Blagdon and sheltered Windermere bays — hold carp, tench and stocked trout. A feeder rod with 30–60g feeders suits deeper pits; use method feeder or hair rig with 8–14mm boilies for carp in 3–10m depths. For trout try floating lines, small buzzers and Diawl Bach patterns mid‑day when fish move into the water column.
Practical checklist
Pack waterproof clothing, thermals, a reliable landing net and tackle for varied tides. Plan trips around tide tables for sea marks and the warmest hours for stillwaters; always respect local restrictions and safety advice.
