April 2026 UK fishing reports
April 2026 early-season UK fishing reports - reservoir levels, trout & grayling hotspots and bank-to-boat tactics from regional keepers

Reservoirs and spring conditions
Reservoirs across England and Scotland are generally running high after a wet winter. Rutland Water and Grafham Water sit near capacity, while Bewl Water and Ladybower report full margins. Scottish lochs such as Loch Awe and Loch Lomond remain cold, with surface temperatures of 5–8°C. Trout are concentrating in 2–6m bands close to inflows, submerged weed edges and wind-blown banks; shallower feeding often occurs in the first hour after dawn.
Trout and grayling hotspots
Chalk streams retain early activity: the Test and Itchen are producing wild browns on small dries (size 16–20) at first light. Grayling reports come from the Wye, Nidd and upper Eden, where fish hold on 1–2m shelves and take small nymphs and shrimp imitations. Loch-style trout fishing is reported on Loch Awe, Lomond and Ullswater, with fish holding deeper as light increases.
Bank-to-boat tactics
From the bank, light 9ft rods (3–5wt), long leaders and floating lines suit shallow feeds; switch to intermediate or sink-tip lines for 2–4m presentations and use tungsten-bead nymphs size 14–16 on droppers. From boats on reservoirs, slow drifts using a drogue or small anchor, downlines and a paternoster with 3–6ft droppers are effective. Keepers recommend robust waders, a lifejacket or buoyancy aid in boats, a working anchor and always checking local permits and bylaws before fishing.
