April river trout roundup
April river trout roundup — on-the-ground reports

Overview
Trout & Salmon local reporters across Britain note an uptick in surface activity as spring progresses. Early-season rising fish are being seen on classic chalk streams and upland rivers, with afternoon windows proving most productive when water temperatures lift.
Thurso highlight
On the north coast, the Thurso River produced a standout capture when an angler landed an 8 lb fresh salmon from the Mill Pool at 3pm on a 1½in Black-and-yellow Tosh fly. The fish bolted immediately, running to backing and carrying the rodholder along a snowy bank before returning; crew revived it for five minutes and reported it as "fresh as a sixpence." The river's slow-flowing, almost canal-like reaches can be hard to read, yet hold big fish when tides and flows align — local guide Ross Macdonald recalls learning from his father Kenny.
Where and how for rising trout
Expect early rising trout on the Test, Itchen, Hampshire Avon, Wye and Severn, plus upland beats in the Lake District and Scottish rivers. Fish often feed in shallow runs and margins 30–60 cm deep when water temperatures reach roughly 6–9 °C. Match small olives, buzzer patterns and sedge emergers; employ light leaders of 9–12 ft and 4–6X tippet. Present dry flies upstream, keep casts close and low, or fish a nymph-dropper for sub-surface takes. Essential kit includes quality waders, a sensitive fly rod and a soft mesh net; always revive trout gently before release.
Recommended: 9ft carbon fly rod
