Atlantic Bluefin Tuna catch-and-release 2026: trainers wanted
MMO and partners invite trainers for 2026 BFT catch-and-release

The Marine Management Organisation, working with the Angling Trust, Cefas, Natural England and Defra, is preparing mandatory training for the 2026 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (BFT) Catch-and-Release Recreational Fishery (CRRF) in England. The move aims to standardise welfare, safety and professional practice as recreational interest rises.
Training overview
Planned provision includes online modules to ensure uniform understanding of best practice and optional in-person sessions combining classroom instruction with practical on-the-water exercises. Training is expected to run between March and July 2026. The Angling Trust will advise when courses go live; their programme will be the only one accepted by MMO for 2026 permit applications.
Who can apply as an accredited trainer
The Angling Trust is seeking experienced charter skippers to deliver the practical element. Minimum criteria include participation as a CHART charter skipper since 2022 or equivalent large pelagic experience and involvement in the 2024/25 CRRF; demonstrable success in Bluefin catch-and-release; access to a suitable shoreside facility and a coded, insured charter vessel; and a commercially endorsed skipper qualification. Teaching or coaching credentials are advantageous. Successful trainers will be contracted by the Angling Trust.
How to register interest
Expressions of interest must be emailed to sea@anglingtrust.net with name, email and telephone number by Friday 19 December 2025. Candidates will receive an application form during the week commencing 5 January 2026, with final decisions expected by February 2026. Submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee accreditation or a permit for the 2026 CRRF.
