Beginner shore‑jig kit for Chesil & Solent
Chesil Beach into the Solent sees sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) push tight to the shoals at first light — jigs 14–35g catch most bites.

Three rod‑reel combos
Light: 9ft shore‑jig rod, 4000‑size spinning reel (HG or faster), 10–15lb braid, 14–28g jigs. Fast, flicky, casts long from a shingle bank.
Medium: 10ft rod, 5000 reel, 15–25lb braid, 20–40g jigs. Best for rip lines off Portland Bill and mid‑Solent flats.
Heavy: 11ft rod, 5000–6000 reel, 25–40lb braid, 35–60g jigs. Use when shore swell is high or casting into a strong flood tide.
Terminal rigs & knots
Use a 60–90cm fluorocarbon leader (20–30lb) attached to braid with a uni‑to‑uni. Tie jigs direct with a doubled Palomar or clip on a size 1/0 snap for quick changes. Keep leader length short when waves are steep, longer when water clears.
Basic dawn retrieves
Let the jig sink to the desired layer (count 2–6 depending on weight). Retrieve with a medium steady wind‑back, or use lift‑and‑fall: two sharp lifts, long pause. Speed up when fish are chasing; slow, deep falls when fish are keyed into sinking bait. Change colours from metal to soft plastic profiles if bites are shy.
Recommended: 20lb fluorocarbon leader
