Dawn Bass Off Portland Bill
Portland Bill dawn ambushes: lee‑line seams lighting up

Portland Bill's western lee-line is producing steady sea bass action every early morning this week. Local skippers report shoals pushing bait along the lee of the Bill, with fish holding the seams where outgoing tide meets the channel swell.
Topwater pops and lightning stings from light-jig presentations are replacing the slow bottom work. Anglers drifting just off the rip, casting parallel to the seams, are getting explosive surface takes before the sun clears the haze.
Water levels and what to expect
Spring tidal ranges are creating a tight window around the last hour of ebb and the first hour of flood. Visibility sits patchy; a cleaner line of water behind the lee holds bait and concentrates bass. Swell under a southwesterly wind is pushing fish closer to the shoreward edges of the Chesil Bank.
Boat crews advise 6–10lb leader for cleaner hookups on topwater, and micro jigs in the 10–20g range when fish pin to the shoals. Forecasts point to steady action through the week as tides remain spring-heavy and water temperatures nudge upwards.
At first light a bass can explode two metres from the boat, water boiling and feathers from the popper spraying across a pale orange sky.
