Portland Bill and the first gully line of Chesil light up on the last flood into the first ebb; that tight tide window is where popper work pays. Cast across or slightly up-current of rock edges and foam seams, keep the lure tight to structure and let the silhouette sell the strike.
Three retrieves
Walk-the-dog retrieve: short rod twitches with brief pauses so the popper slides side-to-side. Best over clear water and the first gully on Chesil when bass are shadowing bait.
Pop-pop-pause retrieve: two sharp taps then a 1–2 second pause. The most reliable dusk cadence when the sea is slightly coloured and bass feed shallow.
Burn-and-stop retrieve: fast reel to burn the popper across a danger area, then stop it hard beside a rock edge or white water. Suits Portland Bill where fish hold in turbulence and ambush prey.
Use a slim braid into a fluorocarbon leader tied with an FG knot for smooth casting through guides. Attach poppers with a Palomar knot to the split ring or a Non-slip loop knot to the eye when extra action is needed. A Double Uni is handy for leader joins if switching lengths between casts.
In light, run the popper just under the skin; in chop, splash it hard then pause. Start near the near structure, vary cadence, and switch retrieves as light fades until a bass rips the surface — foam, flash and the cliff shadow at last light.
