Evening chalk stream leaders
River Test evening seams: 9ft 5-weight fly rod with a 12ft tapered leader and 6X fluorocarbon tippet

Chalk streams demand invisible presentation; a 12ft leader of 4–5X taper tied to a 9ft 5-weight is the baseline. Use fluorocarbon tippet at 6X for that last few inches of invisibility when trout sit in the seam under willows.
For quick swaps, carry a pre-tied 12ft leader and a short spool of 6X fluorocarbon. Attach tippet with a Palomar knot for low profile strength; use an Improved Clinch or Non-Slip Mono Loop for the fly if extra action is wanted.
When building leaders by hand, join sections with a Double Surgeon’s Knot and dress it tight—no bulky knots near the taper. In very clear low water push leader length toward 15ft; in summer crystal conditions consider dropping breaking strain to around 3–4lb.
When to shorten
Shorten to 5ft or move up to 5X only in coloured or high water where visibility is poor. For sight-fishing in evening light keep length long, fish without an indicator and watch the trout’s mouth for the take.
Fly sizes 16–20 for dries and emergers; nymph rigs must remain delicate. Stay low, bank-fish only on protected beats, avoid false casts over fish—the last light slants across the chalk and a trout lifts gently to the emerger.
