Five Quick Leader Knots for River Test
River Test: 9 ft leaders for evening sight-fishing

River Test 9 ft leaders are the standard for evening chalk-stream sight fishing, especially during mayfly rises when trout lock on to surface flies. A tidy 7.5–9 ft nylon tapered leader turning over a size 14–16 spinner or mayfly makes long, delicate presentations possible.
Five quick knots and when to use them
Davy Knot for fly-to-tippet changes—fast, slim and ideal for small dry flies. Double Surgeon’s Knot to join tippets or extend leaders quickly in the field. Clinch Knot for tippet-to-hook when speed matters on sizes 12–18; always wet the knot and snug slowly. Blood Knot builds neat taper joins between butt sections. Uni Knot when a single, reliable knot is needed for line-to-loop or line-to-lure jobs.
Start with a nylon tapered leader ending in 4X for most dries; drop to 5X–6X when fish are picky and the water is glassy. For bigger mayfly patterns many anglers favour roughly 5–6 lb breaking strain in the butt, then fine down to chosen tippet.
Switch to fluorocarbon tippet when abrasion resistance or lower visibility matters—around gravel seams, reed margins or when working subsurface. Keep nylon for top-water work: it turns over better and retains surface tension. When swapping materials, prefer Double Surgeon’s or Uni joins and trim tags close.
A trout rises on a chalky seam, the tippet slips; the knot holds and the mayfly lands like it should.
Recommended: clear fluorocarbon tippet
