March coastal match and sea-trout roundup
March coastal match roundup and spring sea-trout reports from Wales and southwest England

Match results and notable captures
In the past 14 days club matches from Pembrokeshire (St Davids Head) to North Cornwall produced mixed conditions. Pembrokeshire Coast Angling League matches recorded top landed weights near 9–10kg per angler, largely bass and a scattering of plaice and pollack. Gower spring shore events at Rhossili and the Loughor mouth noted mullet shoals and a 3kg sea-trout taken on light tackle at dusk. Exmouth and Torbay shore competitions handed prizes for consistent mackerel runs and large winter plaice on pebbled beaches.
Changing shore tactics
Anglers report water temperatures at estuary mouths between 7–10°C and fish holding in 1–6m depths. To adapt, many are switching to longer casts with 12–14ft beachcasting rods, braid mainlines and thin fluorocarbon leaders (15–25lb), and smaller lures — 10–25g micro jigs and 10–15g soft plastics worked best in rip channels. Night-time estuary patrols and slow retrieves along tide lines have improved sea-trout success, especially on rising spring tides.
Practical tips
Target dawn and dusk on spring tides, keep traces short for quick hookups and use single hooks on spinners for safer catch-and-release. Check the mouths of the Teifi, Tamar and Loughor where sea-trout often hold in 1–3m of water close to structure. Local clubs stress tidy rigs, tidy casts and quick releases to safeguard stocks.
