Pre‑dawn quick‑tune for Test & Itchen ultralight reels
River Test, 3–4 lb fluorocarbon and a 2–3 oz drag

Why it matters
Chalk streams produce delicate rises. Wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) on the Test and Itchen hit hard and run harder. Ultralight tackle betrays no slack. A literal five‑minute checklist prevents heartbreak.
Spool check — 5 mins
Strip 20–30 yards off a size 1000–2000 ultralight reel (Nasci‑style spinning or small fly reel). Inspect for nicks from dew or gravel. Rewind under light tension, thumb on the spool as a pressure pad. Fill to within 1/8 inch of the lip with fresh 4 lb fluorocarbon. No backing. Less stretch suits the Test's faster runs.
Drag settings — 2 mins
Back the drag off, then tighten until it slips at a 2 oz pull. Test by yanking line hand‑over‑hand; a 3 lb trout surge should give line, not break it. For fly reels, palm the spool for micro‑adjusts during the first hour of mayfly duns.
Line checks & terminal tackle — 3 mins
Run a length through fingers for frays from weed beds or gravel. Tie a size 10 barrel swivel 18 inches above the leader for spinner setups. Use a snap for quick Rooster Tail #8 swaps. For flies, loop‑to‑loop 1x mono tippet (8–10 ft) straight to the reel line for 12–18 inch browns in 3–5 ft glides.
