Houghton Club and the Upper Test evenings
Houghton Club, near Stockbridge, names the evening as surely as the river does; on the Upper Test at Houghton Lodge the water is so clear brown trout often show before the fly is taken. Half-mile beats here mix wild and stocked brown trout, and classic beats around Stockbridge, Romsey, Wherwell and Timsbury draw anglers who favour chalk-stream runs and ranunculus beds.
Casts in the gloaming land on shallow limestone rills and tails. Many beats insist on upstream dry fly or nymph-only tactics, hooks commonly no larger than size 10, and the season for trout runs from April to mid-October. Typical fish from these chalk streams measure 30–40 cm, with larger stocked specimens turning up on occasion.
Hut dinners and simple cooking
On private beats the hut dinner is an evening ritual: boots dry on the mat, lamps low, mugs of tea passed round while anglers swap lines and beats—Little River Beat stories sit alongside memories of Houghton and Wherwell. The food is direct and unflashy: a 250–350 g fillet, pan-fried 8–10 minutes on medium heat in butter with dill and lemon zest, finished with a handful of watercress.
