Solent dawn bass: drag, braid and spool setup
The Needles, Isle of Wight, defines first-light bass work on chalk and granite.

Drag, clicker and spool
Set drag to roughly 25–30% of breaking strain as a starting point. That cushions lunges but still allows firm hooksets before a fish buries into rock. Engage the reel clicker or leave drag audible and slightly freer than boat work so a hard run announces itself over wind and surf. Fill the spool to 1–2 mm below the lip to maximise casting distance while avoiding braid spill on quick dawn retrieves.
Lure choices favour reaction baits: 8–12 cm topwaters or shallow hardbaits for the first strips, then 7–8 cm soft plastics on 4–7 g heads when fish sit tight to structure. Fast coverage, long casts and a sharp, controlled hookset win most rocky shore sessions in the Solent.
A bass erupting beside the kelp fringe at first light, monofilament screaming and boots soaked in spray, is the exact kind of moment this setup is built for.
Recommended: high-strength braided line
