Solent & Dorset June Bass Briefing
Peterhead handled 48,160 tonnes in early 2026 — what that means for Solent & Dorset mornings

UK landings jumped to £310.5m in the first four months of 2026, driven by massive pelagic volumes. The abundance of mackerel and blue whiting offshore is already rewriting morning sessions for sea bass along the Solent and Dorset coast.
Skippers out of Lymington and Poole note dawn shoals pushing bait toward the shoreline. The classic windows — first light through the first two hours of the flood, and the top of the tide in Christchurch Bay — are producing most of the action. Water clarity tightened after spring run-off; birds and diving bass mark the spots.
Charter sea bass trips are booking early slots. Surface presentations and light boat gear are working when mackerel slicks appear; from Sandbanks to Portland Bill anglers favour surface lures and single-hook feathers fished under steady tide. Shore anglers on Studland and West Bay do best on the drifting creel line with live mackerel or strips.
Expect sustained morning windows as pelagic runs continue through June. On calm days the scene is unmistakable: charter boats clustered off the Solent at first light, racing gulls and a ribbon of smashed surface bait where bass cut through the shoals.
Local note
Coastal rod choices and a stash of small jigs keep trips productive during tight tidal swings; anglers should watch dawn tides and scout birdlines for the quickest marks.
Recommended: light coastal rod
