Solent Morning Brief: Portland Bill → Chesil
Portland Bill to Chesil Beach: early‑July topwater window

Morning report and tides
Portland Bill skippers are logging surface‑strikes on sea bass at first light, a tight window roughly 05:00–05:45 local. Pollack are up on the rough ledges off the Bill when the flood first pushes, and shorecasters from the Ferrybridge end to the western runs of Chesil should aim for the first push of the flood and the ebb’s opening hour.
Where water eases two hours either side of high or low, eddies and feed lanes form and bass switch on; neaps to mid‑tides give the safest ledge work. After a blow, let clarity settle 12–36 hours for the coloured water Bass like; gin‑clear conditions favour scaled‑down lures for Pollack.
Gear and baits
Topwater windows favour walking baits and buzzbaits first light; the skippers note a 30‑minute surge before the bite cools. Short Sabiki rigs and small hook patterns work tight to structure for Pollack. On Chesil, big sandeel or whole squid on a pulley pennel close to the surf line is turning heads.
Expect midsummer bass in the 30–50 cm range and Pollack up to the mid‑60s. Lines are tight, the sea smells of peeler crab and lugworm, and the morning breaks with a single blistering boil off Portland Bill.
