Twilight sight‑fishing on the Teifi (Cenarth)
Teifi Cenarth: 4–6lb sewin in the tail-outs, late June–August

Reading lowlight seams
Cenarth’s shallow tail-outs (1–3 ft) and gravel runs hold the classic evening sewin. Position upstream with the setting sun at the angler’s back. Scan for shadows on the gravel; sewin show as dark smudges or a line against lighter cobble. Start at pool tails and work toward heads. Fish the inside seams and slack edges first. In low light the fish tuck into slower water on the seam until full dark unless the river colour gives them cover earlier.
Fly choices and lines
Use size 8–12 CDC mergers for buoyant, natural presentation in seams. For heavier turnover on short casts match an Airflo 40+ or a Sewincaster head—one line weight up from the rod rating. A 4–6wt rod covers most Cenarth runs; pair with flies tied on strong hooks for 2–6lb sewin.
Short‑line presentation
Keep casts under 40 ft. A 9 ft #4 rod rigged with a 12–14 ft leader gives drag-free drifts in tail-outs. Cast just above the sighted fish and mend into the seam rather than across it. For short-line nymphing employ heavy flies and tight loops; set on lateral flashes or a sudden surge. Work inside seams first, then fringe edges as light fades.
Rigs, knots and leader notes
Use 10–15 lb main leaders; avoid ultra-fine mono that shies fish in evening runs. Blood knots and double uni provide secure, slim joins for long leaders. Keep tippet length short if using strong CDC bodies, and step down only where the fly turns over slowly.
