Lower River Teifi at Cardigan offers a tight dusk window where sewin and evening trout run hard into seams and tailouts; a 9–10 ft 5–20 g rod is the most useful tool for those close to midrange casts.
Setup 1 — finesse dusk sewin rod: a 9–10 ft spinning rod (5–20 g or 7–21 g class) matched to a 2500–3000 size spinning reel. Use 8–12 lb braid to a 1.5–2 m fluorocarbon leader of 10–12 lb. Carry small metals and minnows in 5–12 g and 45–70 mm sizes. Best over calm middle/lower Teifi water where slack seams and tailouts hold fish.
Setup 2 — distance and wind
Setup 2 uses a 10 ft rod rated 15–30 g with a 3000–4000 spinning reel. Braid of 10–15 lb with a 12–16 lb fluorocarbon leader handles stained runs and longer casts to creases around Llechryd, Cardigan banks and tidal reaches toward St Dogmaels. Metals of 10–20 g and minnows 70–90 mm reach far edges and deeper lies.
Technique & knots: cast slightly upstream or across, let the lure sink, then employ a steady retrieve with short twitches, pauses and lift‑and‑fall action. Use a Uni to tie braid to spool, double Uni to join braid to leader and a clinch for lure swivels. Keep a headtorch, a sturdy landing net and boots for slippery banks.
