Test Trout Dawn Window
Freelands Estate, River Test below Stockbridge — dawn and low light

Brown trout on the Test are showing in clear‑stained water with temperatures between 58–72°F, and July's dawn window can offer a sharp, early opportunity before the regular evening rise.
Hatches active include Caddis and Blue Winged Olive ephemerids; Elk Hair Caddis and Bird of Prey in sizes #12–16 will match the sedge, while Emerger and Weighted Shrimp patterns in #12–14 cover the BWO feed. When surface takes are tight, switch to smaller LDO hooks in #18–24 for selective trout.
Leader and line cues for tight‑lie sightings
Presentation is everything: a 9ft leader with a floating line and light tippet down to 2lb makes subtle offerings on chalk. Fish the surface to 1–2 inches deep for dry work; if the dawn fizz dies, nymphs weighted to 2–3 ft will pick up fish holding a foot below riffles.
Water clarity is clear‑stained today; read lies where spring water meets slower glide, and watch for pinwheel rises and tiny rings. Sight fish with low casts and a soft drop—trout on the Test will inspect an exact imitation. Evening remains the more regular meal, but a calm July dawn at Freelands will still produce tight‑lie sightings and clean, textbook takes.
