Hickling Broad's prime window runs 18:00–20:00 when pike slide shallow from 1.8–3.5 m to hold 0.9–1.5 m along reed margins and outside weed edges. This is not casual casting; it's a timed hunt where approach, profile and depth decide the take.
Reed-margin approaches
Fish the quiet bays, marginal reeds and lily beds first. Pike hold tight to cover and ambush across short lanes into open water. A low-profile boat or a careful bank lane keeps glare and noise down; clumsy footsteps and hard drops will shut down a lie-out pike before the lure finishes its fall.
Weedless profiles
In snaggy reed edges a Texas-rigged shad or weedless jig is the practical choice, allowing near-vertical drops and lifts through the water column without constant foul-ups. Keep the lure above and around the weed rather than punching deep; deadbaits or lures on or just off the bottom work too. Use 20 lb minimum wire trace and semi-barbed trebles to handle Broads pike.
Timing the twilight ambush
Start slow as light falls, then speed retrieves if contact comes higher. Fish hitting the front of the mouth favour smaller, slower presentations; bulkier, faster profiles tempt more aggressive individuals. The late-light shift is decisive: a single cast into a reed shadow often produces the strike, a flash and the pull of a pike from the black water.
