Three quick leader and tippet tweaks
Stockbridge on the River Test at dusk: a 9ft leader is king

Stockbridge and the upper Itchen demand finesse. For evening dry‑fly sight‑fishing during caddis and sedge hatches target brown trout with a 9‑foot 5X tapered fluorocarbon leader as the baseline; that length tames the current and reads clear water perfectly.
Leader length
Extend with 24 inches of matching 5X tippet in slow, gin‑clear Test beats to reach roughly 11 feet for a ghostly, natural drift. In faster runs on the Itchen trim that extra to 12–18 inches to avoid slack and hang‑ups while keeping stealth.
Tippet material & size matter: choose fluorocarbon—5 lb or 7 lb breaking strength—for low visibility and a slight sink profile. Use 5X or 6X for common caddis (size 16–18) and sedge (14–16). Drop to 6X for size 18–20 emergers for increased delicacy.
Subtle presentation fixes: cast upstream or across‑and‑up, land with a concave loop and dead float, allowing a slight drag only at the strike zone. For picky trout add a tiny split shot 3–6 inches above the fly or select a size 16 parachute caddis on 6X for maximum subtlety. Carry spare 5X and 6X spools for quick swaps; a bronze flank breaking the surface beneath a sedge shadow sells the method.
