The Margarita Story: From Dallas Socialites to Tequila Daisy Evolution
The exact origins of the Margarita remain shrouded in mystery, though industry lore often attributes its creation to the savvy marketing strategies of tequila producers in the 1940s.
In reality, pinpointing its true genesis is likely impossible. The precise history of this iconic drink remains unverified, but it's generally believed to have emerged from the US/Mexico border regions sometime between the 1930s and early 1950s.
While numerous tales abound regarding the birth of this agave-citrus cocktail, we've selected a few of our favorite anecdotes to share with your guests as you serve those salt-rimmed glasses.

MARGARITA ORIGIN STORIES FOR YOUR GUESTS
Many stories surrounding the cocktail's creation revolve around a skilled bartender crafting a personalized drink for a demanding patron or someone with allergies to existing offerings.
One legend suggests that bartender Danny Negrete invented the drink as a wedding gift in 1936. Danny and his brother, David, opened a bar at the Garci Crispo hotel in Puebla, Mexico, and the recipe – featuring triple sec, fresh lime juice, and Tequila Blanco over crushed ice – was conceived for his soon-to-be sister-in-law, Margarita.
Margaret Sames
Another frequently recounted tale involves Margaret Sames, a Dallas socialite who claimed to have conceived the classic at one of her Acapulco house parties in 1948. Supposedly, her guest list included influential figures from the hotel and restaurant industries, who subsequently popularized the cocktail.
However, cocktail historian David Wondrich proposes a more plausible theory: that the Margarita evolved from the widely enjoyed Daisy cocktails of the 1930s (a family of cocktails comprising a base spirit, curacao, and citrus, similar to the Sidecar). "Margarita" is Spanish for "daisy," paying homage to the Tequila-based Daisy that has been enjoyed for around 100 years.
