How much groundbait to use

This is a question that can't be answered with a number, for two reasons. First, groundbait quantity is regulated, and differently from country to country. Second, even where there's no limit, the right amount depends on what's happening in the water right now.

The rules come first

Ukraine's Amateur Fishing Rules don't contain the word ‘groundbait’: they regulate what's on the hook, not what's thrown into the water. But this wiki is read in eight languages, and in some countries a daily limit exists, varies between districts, and on certain stretches a seasonal ban is added on top of it.

So the only honest answer here is: check the allowed amount against the specific water's rules before heading out. It can't be worked out from what's written for a neighbouring country or a different region — that's exactly how violations happen.

It's also worth checking exactly what's restricted. The first thing to fall under a ban is often not groundbait itself but pre-baiting — feed laid in the spot in advance, before the fishing even starts.

What the fish itself says

From there, quantity is set by feedback. The bites keep coming steadily — there's enough feed, no reason to add more. Bites happened and then stopped — there are two opposite reasons, and they're distinguishable: the feed ran out — bites thin out gradually; the fish got full — bites go sluggish even though the fish hasn't left the spot.

The opening feed and topping up

The logic of the opening feed is to gather fish quickly; the logic of topping up is to keep them from scattering. These are different jobs with different mixes: the start usually carries more coarse fraction, the top-up less and more often. In current, topping up is mandatory by definition: the patch keeps drifting away.

Why too much is worse than too little

Too little is fixed by the next portion in short order. Too much isn't fixed by anything: the feed is already on the bottom, the fish is already eating it, and all that's left is to wait. Because of this asymmetry, baiting up goes from less to more: start with less than seems necessary, and add according to the response.

What doesn't get eaten

Whatever the fish doesn't eat stays on the bottom. In warm water it turns sour quickly, and next time the spot works worse than a clean patch of bottom right next to it. This is an observable result within the same day, not some abstract harm to nature.

What feed does to the water

There are peer-reviewed sources here. Work by Mariańska and colleagues in ‘Knowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems’ (2026) shows rapid nutrient release from groundbait, with measurable changes in dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity, and found that carp-oriented groundbait mixes themselves had the highest concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals — the mixes were tested directly, not the water after they broke down.

A study by Imbert and colleagues in ‘Fisheries Management and Ecology’ (2025) estimates nitrogen and phosphorus inputs from angling baits in lakes, and shows that they differ between carp and roach fisheries. Why this is a practical argument

Because it works against the angler. Too much feed fills the fish today and changes the water tomorrow — and both lower the odds of a bite in that same spot. That's why soil in the mix and restraint in topping up are part of that same job: attract, hold, don't feed.
