Lead and its alternatives
Lead did not become the material of sinkers by accident: it is dense, cheap, and soft enough to be pinched on with your fingers. Replacing any of those three properties changes something in the tackle — and not only in the ecology.
Density sets the volume
The weight is taken as equal; the size of the piece is not. A denser metal gives a smaller piece at the same weight, a less dense one a larger. That is the whole practical difference between materials.
And size decides the rest by itself: a smaller piece snags less on stone and root, disturbs less water and shows less on the bottom. The sinker's other properties do not depend on material — they are covered under the sinker itself.
Tungsten
The main replacement for lead where small volume is wanted. Tungsten is denser, so the sinker comes out more compact than a lead one of the same weight, and it is harder too — it telegraphs what it is rolling over better.
The price is money and hardness. A hard piece cannot be pinched on with fingers, which is why split shot is not made from tungsten: softness is precisely what is needed there.
Steel, brass, ceramic
All less dense than lead, so the piece comes out larger. Where volume does not matter — still water, clean bottom — there is almost no difference; on stone a larger piece snags more often.
Brass is also noisy: in carp fishing it is put together with beads deliberately so the rig makes a sound.
Softness is a property too
Split shot is pinched onto the line with fingers or pliers, and that is only possible with a soft metal. So in the smallest class of sinkers lead is the hardest to replace, and that is where it persists longest.
Pinch carefully: an over-crushed shot cuts the line, and the break comes at that point — see fixed sinkers.
What changes in the cast
A bulkier piece of the same mass goes through the air worse: drag grows faster than weight. So replacing lead with a less dense metal shortens the cast at the same number on the packet.
The reverse holds too: a tungsten sinker flies slightly further than a lead one of the same weight, simply because it is smaller.
