Glow and UV finishes
Two stickers on the packaging — “glow” and “UV” — mean two different things. The first glows in the dark on its own, the second never glows at all.
Glow pigment
The pigment stores light and then gives it back as its own glow. In fishing finishes this is most often zinc sulfide or strontium aluminate — the second is brighter and lasts noticeably longer. It’s applied either as a solid coat or as a stripe or spot on the side.
How long the glow lasts
Brightness fades unevenly: the first few minutes are the brightest, then the fade speeds up. So a lure isn’t charged “once per session” but before every cast, using a torch or a camera flash — a strong short burst charges it better than a weak long one. The pigment itself isn’t used up: the charge-and-fade cycle repeats as many times as you like.
Where it actually changes something
At depth, at dusk and at night — wherever there’s nothing left to reflect and ordinary flash stops working. It’s the one finish that doesn’t depend on outside light at the moment of the retrieve.
Under ice and in deep vertical jigging
In winter there’s little light under the ice, and at great depth there’s none at all — that’s why glow-in-the-dark ice jigs, balance lures and deep-sea jigs are made this way. It isn’t a fashion but the only way to give the eye a signal where the sun doesn’t reach. Snow on the ice cuts what light remains even further, and that’s exactly when the finish decides the most.
UV finishes
A UV finish reflects near ultraviolet — the part of the spectrum the human eye can’t see at all. A patch on the lure, invisible in daylight, lights up under a UV torch; that’s the whole demonstration shown in the shop.
Whether a fish sees ultraviolet
Some species have cones in the retina sensitive to ultraviolet, and they’re more often found in juveniles than in adults. So the organ for it does exist — but not in every species and not at every life stage. That’s the whole basis this class of finishes has.
Where UV definitely doesn’t work
Water dampens ultraviolet faster than the blue-green part of the spectrum, so with depth there’s less of it exactly where the finish is supposed to help. Against a glow pigment this is a fundamental difference: one carries its own light, the other waits for someone else’s. Compare it with the rest of the finishes.
What we don’t write here
We don’t write that UV lures catch better. Having UV-sensitive cones and an edge on the water are different claims, and the second isn’t proven by any source available to us.
