Binders and loosening agents
A binder makes the mix stickier, a loosening agent makes it crumblier. Both control one and the same thing: how long the ball stays a ball after it enters the water.
What binders are for
So the mix survives the trip down. At depth, the ball has to reach the bottom intact, or the feed scatters through the water column and calls fish above the hookbait. In current, it's so the mix doesn't get stretched out along the riverbed. And in a feeder, it's so it survives the shock of the cast.
What loosening agents are for
So the mix releases itself on the spot. A ball packed too tight can sit on the bottom almost unopened — then the feed is technically in the water, but only its surface is doing any work. A loosening agent forces the ball to open up right where it landed.
Why they're added together
Because the task isn't to make the ball tough or fragile, but to make it survive exactly the trip to the bottom and open up right after. One without the other gives either dust scattered through the water column, or a lump sitting on the bottom. The balance between the two is exactly what gets tuned for the depth.
What's used to do this
A binder can be a separate product added to the dry mix before it's wetted, or it can be a property of the base itself: a fine grind and sticky ingredients bind on their own, without additives. A loosening agent more often works through structure — a light, large particle keeps the mass from clumping together.
How this is tested before fishing
A ball is thrown into clear water near the bank, and what happens to it is watched. Falls apart on the way down — not enough binder. Lands on the bottom and sits there as a lump — too much. The test gives an answer before the first cast is wasted.
A common mistake in shallow water
Binder gets added ‘just in case’, out of habit from deep water. In shallow water the trip is short, and the ball arrives intact even without it — and then sits there unopened. Everything looks right on the outside, but there's no feed in the water: it's all inside the lump.
What won't be here
Break-down time in minutes. The same lump of mix, in shallow water and at depth, packed hard or loose, opens up with a difference of several times over, and any number here would read as a norm. This is controlled through moisture and how firmly it's packed.
