Slider floats: depth without limits
A slider float is not held on the line: the line passes through its eye or its tube, and it runs freely along it. The depth is set not by the float but by the stop above it — and that is why depth stops depending on the length of the rod.
How this removes the depth limit
On the cast the float lies down by the lead — the rig is compact and lifts clear of the water easily. Once in the water the weight pulls the line down, it runs through the eye, and the float rises until it comes up against the stop.
Because of that you can fish depths several times the length of the tackle — something a fixed float cannot do at all.
The stop and the bead
The stop is a knot tied from line, or a silicone fitting on the mainline; you slide it by hand and that sets the depth. A bead between the stop and the float is needed because the eye of the float is bigger than the knot: without it the stop simply passes through.
The bead is not an accessory but a condition of the rig working — without it the depth does not hold at all.
Why the rig needs a heavier weight
The line has to draw through the eye under the weight of the rig itself. A light weight does not do it: the float stays where it is, the depth never sets, and from the outside it looks like “the float will not go down”.
The weight here cannot be cut back freely — and in this the slider rig is the direct opposite of the fixed one, where the shot is lightened almost without limit.
What gets in the way in practice
The stop has to pass freely through the rod rings and the line roller of the reel. An oversized knot bangs against the rings on the cast and slows the line, and casting range drops.
The second small thing is time. The float does not cock instantly, and for the first seconds after it lands the rig is still settling; a bite at that moment does not read.
Where it is unnecessary
In shallow water a slider rig gives nothing and costs accuracy and speed. Where a fixed float reaches the bottom, a slider is extra parts and an extra point of failure.
