Patch, column and cloud

A ball of groundbait that has fallen into the water stops being a ball. From then on it exists in three forms at once, and the mix is built around which of the three should dominate.

The patch on the bottom

What made it down and settled. The patch calls slowly — the signal doesn't rise — but it holds fish right where the hookbait lies. This is the main form for bottom fishing and for wary fish that don't come up into the water column.

The column in the water

Particles that break off the ball on the way down and settle slowly. They form a vertical trail from the surface to the bottom. The column gathers fish above the bottom — and that's not always good: if the hookbait is lying on the bottom, the fish sits above it and never sees it.

The cloud

The finest fraction, suspended in the water. It's the same base, ground fine, so it does have food value — but the fish can't collect it: the particles are too small and too scattered through the volume. So the cloud works as a pure signal: it attracts fast and stops working just as fast if the fish, once it arrives, finds nothing solid.

What controls the balance between them

By how firmly it's packed and by moisture. A tightly packed, damp ball reaches the bottom almost whole — the patch dominates. A loosely packed, dry one falls apart in the upper layer — the cloud dominates. The same bag of mix gives both results, and that's decided on the bank, not in the shop.

Which form calls which fish

Cloud and column gather small fish faster — fish that hold in the water column and react to movement. The patch on the bottom works slower, but it selects for those that feed down low. Because of this, too much cloud is a common reason why a spot fills up with small fish while the big ones disappear.

Why a choice has to be made

Column and patch compete: everything that went into the water column never reached the bottom. Trying to get both at once gives a blurred spot — the fish is there, but spread out across depth. So the mix is built for one form, and the other is accepted as a side effect.

Where this shows up most

At depth and in current, where the trip down is long and a lot has time to go into the water column. That's exactly where the binder stops being a small detail and starts deciding the outcome.
