What a fixed float is
A fixed float is held on the line and does not move along it. It is attached with silicone tubing on the stem, with a removable adaptor, or by threading the line through the eye. There is one consequence and it is the main one: the fishing depth runs into the length of the tackle.
Why depth runs into the rod
A fish that is hooked has to be lifted out of the water. If there is more line between float and hook than the rod and line together, there is nowhere to lift the rig to: the float is already at the rod tip and the hook is still under water.
This is the geometry of the tackle, not a fault of one model: depth is counted against the length of the rod. Nothing gets round it except changing to a slider float.
What a fixed attachment gives
The depth is set once and does not shift. The rig arrives at the spot assembled, the float cocks as soon as it lands, and the very first bite reads — there are no seconds lost while the line draws through an eye.
The strike goes home with no slack either: the line from rod tip to hook is one piece, with no loose sections.
Tubing, adaptor, loop
Tubing — a length of tube on the stem; it holds by friction, moves by hand, is the cheapest and is most often to blame when the float slips. An adaptor — a fitting with a clip, letting you change the float without breaking the rig down. A loop — the line threaded through the eye.
The harder a fitting pinches the line, the sooner that line fails at that spot — the kink is remembered, and later it breaks exactly there.
What goes first
Tubing cracks in sun and frost, an adaptor’s clip wears loose. The float starts to slip, the depth changes in the middle of the session, and it looks like “the fish have gone off”.
Check with a finger: the float should move along the stem with noticeable effort. If it slides freely, replace it before it starts.
Where it wins and where it loses
It wins in shallow and middling depths: faster, more accurate, fewer parts, fewer points of failure. It loses where the depth is greater than the tackle — there it does not work at all.
It loses again in a strong wind: the length of line from rod tip to float is taut and catches the wind, and the rig drifts off the spot.
What we do not write here
At what depth it is “time to change to a slider”. The cut-off is not counted in metres but by comparison: the depth against the length of your tackle. There is no general figure here and there cannot be one.
