Fishing rods: types, rating and action
A rod is a flexible blank that carries the angler's force to the lure and then absorbs the fish's runs. Everything else attaches to it: the reel, the line, the guides, the seat. Six types of rod
The type is set not by the shape of the blank but by the method it was built for. That is why rods of one type resemble each other more than rods of the same length from different groups.
- Spinning rods — for casting and working an artificial lure.
- Carp rods — for distance casting and long fights with big fish.
- Feeder rods — for a feeder, with a sensitive tip as the bite indicator.
- Float rods — for a float rig.
- Fly rods — for casting the weight of the line itself rather than the lure.
- Winter rods — short, for fishing through a hole in the ice.
Casting weight: what load the blank is built for
Casting weight is the range of lure or rig weight in which the blank works as the maker intended. Below the range the rod does not complete the cast: the lure never loads the blank and the cast falls short. Above it the blank is overloaded, and its safety margin is eaten away with every cast.
The range is printed on the blank near the reel seat. Units and notation differ between types, so look them up in the article for your own type rather than carrying them over from another.
Action: where the blank bends
Action describes which part of the blank takes the bend under load. A fast action bends mostly the tip, a slow one the whole blank from the handle. This is not a quality scale: a fast blank transmits the bite more precisely and strikes more sharply, a slow one absorbs runs more gently and breaks fine leaders less often.
So action is chosen for the fishing, not for the price. Active lure work calls for a faster blank; a delicate rig on fine line for a slower one.
Length: distance against control
A long rod casts further and handles line better above the water; a short one is more accurate and tires the arm less. The choice is limited not only by the distance you want but by the bank: an overgrown or narrow approach makes a long blank awkward whatever its merits.
Blank material
Blanks are made of carbon fibre, glass fibre and a mix of the two — composite. Carbon is lighter and stiffer, glass takes knocks better and costs less, composite sits between them. Material on its own does not make a rod better: it decides what you will have to give up — weight, toughness or price.
Construction: sections, telescopes and guides
By the way they fold, blanks are either put together at ferrules or telescopic, sliding one section into another. Ferruled blanks hold their action more evenly; telescopic ones travel better.
Separately from the blank, the guides do their own work. Their number and spacing decide how the line lies along the rod under load, and the ring insert decides how kindly they treat braid.
Care extends the rod's life
A rod is more often ruined not by fishing but by what happens after it. Sand and salt, a wet section put away folded, a cracked guide insert — each of those costs the blank years. The routine is set out in Rod care and storage.
