Left-hand and right-hand retrieve
On a spinning reel the handle swaps sides in a minute. On a baitcaster it does not: the handle side is fixed by the design, and left-hand and right-hand are separate models, bought separately.
Why it cannot be swapped
On a spinning reel the handle sits on a through shaft, and the other side of the body has a socket ready for it. On a baitcaster the handle sits on the spool shaft together with the gearing — swapping it would mean rebuilding the whole mechanism mirrored.
The question is not which hand is stronger
The usual line of thought — «I am right-handed, so a right-hand reel» — leads the wrong way. What decides is different: which hand holds the rod during the retrieve, because that is the hand doing all the work with the lure.
A right-handed angler normally casts with the right. From there two paths: either move the rod to the left hand and wind with the right, or leave it in the right and wind with the left. The first calls for a change of hands after every cast, the second for nothing at all.
Where the habit of swapping came from
From spinning tackle: there the handle sat on the left by default for years, and no swap was needed. Carrying the same arrangement over to a baitcaster, many buy a right-hand model — and acquire a hand change where there need not have been one.
What it changes on the water
A hand change costs a fraction of a second and one movement. Over twenty casts that is nothing; over two hundred it is fatigue, and above all: during the change the lure is not under control. Where the take comes right after touchdown, that has a price.
There is a cost the other way too: winding with the weaker hand is awkward at first, and the first few sessions go slower. It passes, but it is a real cost rather than an imagined one.
What follows for the purchase
The choice is made before buying, and once: the mistake is not cured by adjustment and not fixed with a part. So before ordering it is worth taking a rod in hand and making the retrieve motion — it becomes clear which hand is free.
If the reel is already the wrong one
It cannot be converted, and there are two honest options: get used to the hand change, or change the reel. The first one works — the change becomes automatic within a season, and most anglers fish exactly that way without giving it a thought.
What we do not state here
Which is right in general. Both arrangements work, and practitioners line up on both sides, while we found no measurement showing an advantage for either. The difference that can be stated honestly is whether a hand change is needed or not.
