Centrepin reels: a drum without gearing
A centrepin is the simplest construction of the three: a drum, an axle and a brake. No line-lay mechanism, no gearing, no bail arm. Line winds on by the same rotation of the drum that lets it off.
Simplicity is the property
The fewer the parts, the less there is to break, to clog with sand and to service. A centrepin survives conditions in which more complex types fail: cold, sand, silty water.
The price is everything else: casting one takes practice, range falls short of a spinning reel, and there is no fast retrieve — one turn of the handle is one turn of the drum.
Why a fly reel is a centrepin too
In fly fishing the reel plays no part in the cast: the rod drives the line, not line leaving a drum. All that is asked of the reel is to hold the line and give it out evenly under a fish.
No complex mechanism is needed for that, which is why fly reels stay centrepins even in expensive ranges. What differs between them is mostly drag quality and weight.
The brake here replaces the drag mechanism
The function is the same — stop a fish tearing line off with a run — but done more simply: the drum is slowed mechanically. On the plainest models it is done with a finger on the rim, and that gives the finest control of all.
Thumb control is not primitive but an advantage: the angler feels the load directly and reacts faster than any mechanism.
Capacity matters more than gear ratio
A centrepin has no gear ratio at all — the drum turns with the handle. So the only parameter that really means anything is how much line or fly line it will hold.
In fly fishing that is counted together with backing — the reserve line under the fly line, needed precisely for when a fish takes more than the fly line has.
Where it survives
Besides fly fishing, centrepins live on in winter fishing, where simplicity and working in frost count, and in some river methods where the drum gives line freely with the current. In winter rods it is often built into the handle.
What not to expect from it
Long casts with light lures, fast retrieves and forgiveness of mistakes. These are not defects of the design but its limits: a centrepin does one thing and does it dependably.
