What Is a Swivel
A swivel is a part made of two rings joined by a rotating pin: a barrel, a ball, or a bearing inside the body. The rings hold onto the line and the lure, and the pin between them lets them turn independently.
How the twist actually gets absorbed
A spinning lure or fish turns the swivel’s ring on one side. The other ring, tied to the rest of the line, stays still — the rotation “gets stuck” on the pin and doesn’t carry any further.
Without this mechanism, the twist would travel the whole length of the line right up to the reel, where it lays unevenly on the spool and springs into loops on the next cast.
Barrel and ball-bearing — different smoothness
A barrel swivel has a pin with no bearing — it turns under load, but with some resistance. A ball-bearing swivel has a bearing inside and turns much more freely, with almost no resistance even under light force.
Smoother rotation costs more and weighs more — the difference is noticeable on heavy jigging, and often beside the point on a light rig.
Working load, not the number
The packet carries two numbers: the size number and the breaking strain (strength). A swivel is chosen by matching its strain rating against the line’s breaking strain — a part weaker than the line becomes a sacrificial link, a part stronger is just extra weight.
Where a swivel doesn’t help
It absorbs twist that has already built up, but doesn’t prevent it: the source of the rotation (a spinning lure) stays exactly the same. A swivel doesn’t make up for a badly tied knot either — the load still passes through it in full.
