What Is Terminal Tackle Hardware
Terminal tackle hardware means swivels, snaps, stops, beads, clips, tubes and rings: parts that connect and fix other parts of the tackle. On its own it catches nothing and holds no fish — its job stays invisible until it breaks.
Why these parts break first
Every piece of hardware is a joint, and a joint is always weaker than solid, unbroken material. Line breaks where it’s bent or pinched, not in the middle of a straight stretch — and that’s most often right next to a swivel, a snap, or a stop.
So the quality of the hardware matters out of all proportion to its size: one cheap part can undo an expensive line and rod.
Two opposite jobs
Part of the hardware allows movement — a swivel rotates, removing twist. Another part restricts movement — a stop fixes a position on the line. These aren’t two versions of the same thing but two opposite jobs, and mixing them up means putting the wrong part in the wrong place.

Size and load are different numbers
The number on the packet shows the size of the part, while breaking strain is a separate figure next to it, and that’s the one that determines what weight or jerk the part can take. Two parts with the same number from different makers can carry different breaking strains.
Hardware is always compared by breaking strain, never by number — the number is only a guide to size, not a guarantee of strength.
Material decides longevity, not strength right away
Coated carbon steel and stainless steel can carry the same breaking strain when new. The difference shows up over time: the coating scratches, corrosion starts underneath it, and it quietly weakens the part well before that becomes visible.
For freshwater, the difference is often not critical over a season. For saltwater, it’s decisive: rust starts there in days, not months.
