Minnow, shad and crank: body shape

A hardbait's body shape answers one question: how wide the lure rolls at the same speed. The three familiar names — minnow, shad and crank — are three answers, not three brands.

Minnow — narrow and long

A body shaped like an elongated baitfish. Water resistance is low, the amplitude tight, and the lure breaks rhythm easily and returns to it — which is why a minnow responds well to a jerk-and-pause retrieve.

Crank — short and stout

A tall rounded body catches a lot of flow and rolls wide. A lure like this works on a steady retrieve and pulls noticeably on the hand — the drag through the rod blank shows it is working.

Shad — in between

A body taller than a minnow but shorter than a crank: amplitude is medium, the action calmer. This is the shape for when a wide roll is too much and a tight one is not enough.

The tail section works too

The body ends either in a narrow tail stalk or a wide tail fin. A narrow stalk barely gets in the way of the body rocking, a wide tail section dampens the motion and makes the action calmer with the same front lip. The rear treble hangs off the tail too, and its weight is also part of this balance.

Jointed models

A body cut into two or three segments joined by rings moves differently: each segment turns with a delay, and the track it leaves is wavy. In drag they are closer to a crank, but in the character of their action they are like nothing on the list.

Size is a separate choice

Length says nothing about amplitude: a short crank rolls wider than a long minnow, even though it is smaller. Size cuts off the fish, shape sets the motion — these are two independent choices, and confusing them is costly.

Shape and depth are not the same thing

Body shape is responsible for amplitude, the lip sets the depth. So a crank can be shallow or deep, and a minnow can be a surface bait or a deep diver: these are different traits that just happen to get mentioned together often.

Makers produce a series of the same body in different lengths, and all of them keep the same character of action. So the choice of ‘which shape’ and the choice of ‘what size’ are made separately: first for the motion you need, then for the fish and the casting distance.

Shape carries the hooks with it

A long body carries its trebles spaced apart, a short one close together, and on short models the hooks catch on each other more often when casting. This is not a design flaw but a consequence of shape, and that is exactly why cranks more often carry smaller hooks.
