What is an ice jig
An ice jig is a lure you can't take apart: the hook and the body are one piece. The body is cast or sintered straight onto the hook shank, so there's nothing in it that can be swapped.
How it's built
The body is a drop, a ball, a cone or a flat disc; its shape sets how the lure hangs and how it swings. The line is either tied to an eye or threaded through a hole in the body. The point sticks out at an angle that's also fixed when the body is cast.
A through-hole and an eye aren't the same thing
An eye holds the line at one fixed point, and the lure swings under it. A through-hole lets the body sit at a different angle: the line passes through the body and is tied off on the shank, and the ice jig tips to one side — the further the knot sits from the body, the more it tips. These are different lures, not two versions of one.
Why the hole gets a piece of tubing
The edge of a through-hole is hard, and the line running through it is thin — that's exactly where it wears in use. So a piece of tubing goes into the hole to take that wear instead of the line. Without it, the break happens not at the knot but on the lure itself: the line is worn through there, and it snaps at the worst possible moment — with a fish already on the hook.
What sits on it besides the hook
A bead or a few short lengths of tubing on the shank aren't decoration — they're a visible point for the fish to aim at. They also slow the lure's fall by adding bulk without adding weight.
The hook doesn't change
The point sticks out of bare metal and dulls against the ice at the hole, against the bottom, and against the fish. You can sharpen it — you can't replace it, and that's exactly why a winter box holds dozens of them. On a jigging minnow the bottom treble is the part that gets swapped, on a spoon it's the hook on its ring or chain; on an ice jig, nothing is swappable at all.
Why the point sits at an angle
The angle between the shank and the body sets which way the point faces when the lure hangs. It's cast together with the body and can't be adjusted — which is why two ice jigs of the same weight and shape can hook fish differently, and you can already see it in the box.
How it's tied on
Line goes to an eye with an ordinary knot, but through a hole it has to be threaded and tightened up on the shank — otherwise the lure won't settle into the right position. A knot tied in the wrong place changes the hanging angle more than the shape of the body ever could.
What it does to the line
Line for an ice jig is chosen thin, and it picks up memory from the reel spool. Stretched by the lure's weight, it doesn't straighten out right away — and until it does, the spring bobber's movement doesn't fully reach the lure.
