Rattles and the sound chamber

A sound chamber is a cavity in the body holding loose balls. Each ball strikes the wall and the neighbouring balls, and that rattle carries far beyond the range at which the lure is visible.

Where it occurs

In a hardbait, because its body is hollow anyway. Soft plastic doesn’t get a chamber — the body is soft and deadens the impact; there, a separate capsule is fitted on the hook or in the rig, which is a different item, not part of the lure itself.

Why a metal lure has none

A metal lure is solid metal with no cavity. Its sound is different: the split ring rattling against the hook, and the metal itself ringing when it hits a rock. There will never be a chamber in it — there’s nowhere to put one.

Ball size and material

A large steel ball gives a low, loud knock, small glass ones a quieter, higher one. Brass falls in between. You can hear this in your hand just by shaking the lure by your ear, and that’s the simplest way to check it before buying: the ball material is almost never listed on the packaging.

One ball versus many

One large ball gives a sparse, distinct knock in time with the motion. A dozen small ones give a continuous rustle with no rhythm at all. These are two different signals, not “more” and “less” of one, and a low, sparse knock also carries further in water. There can also be several separate chambers spread through the body — then the sound changes with how the lure is tilted.

What else knocks inside a hardbait

Split rings against the body, hooks against each other, and in jointed models the hinge between body sections. So a lure with no balls at all still isn’t silent, and nobody gets true silence out of it.

The chamber changes the balance too

The balls have weight and roll around inside the body, so a lure with a chamber sits differently on the cast and hangs differently on the pause. In hardbaits this directly affects the class: the same model in a silent version can behave differently.

Silent versions

Manufacturers release “silent” versions of the same models — with the same body and no balls. The very existence of such a line means noise isn’t always an advantage, and on heavily pressured water it’s exactly these that get picked. The price stays the same.

What we don’t write here

We don’t name frequencies and don’t say which knock a fish “likes”. We haven’t been able to measure that on live water by any method available to us, and lab spectra don’t translate into a choice of lure.
