The lateral line and the lure
The lateral line is a row of sensory cells in a canal beneath the scales running along the flank and over the head. It reads not sound but water movement relative to the fish’s body.
What it actually feels
A change in water speed at the skin. A lure moving nearby drags a disturbance behind it, and it’s that disturbance that excites the canal’s cells. Some of those cells sit inside the canal itself, others are open on the skin. A motionless lure gives off none of this signal at all, so a pause switches off the lateral line the same way darkness switches off the eye.
Range
It’s a short-range organ: it works over roughly one to two body lengths of the fish itself. Beyond that limit, the disturbance from a lure no longer stands out against general water movement — current, waves and the fish’s own motion. For a metre-long pike that’s a metre or two, not a dozen metres, and that’s exactly what sets the lateral line apart from hearing.
Why this isn’t sound
The inner ear picks up pressure waves and hears far away. The lateral line picks up the flow itself. These are two different organs with two different ranges, and confusing them means expecting something from a lure it doesn’t actually do. Both together are in the card about sound and vibration.
The same organ keeps a fish in position
The lateral line isn’t only for hunting: a fish uses it to read current and hold in the flow, avoid obstacles in the dark, and keep station in a shoal. A lure lands on an organ that runs continuously, not one that switches on just to hunt.
When it decides the outcome
At night, in murk, in silt and under ice — anywhere sight is switched off. A predator homes in on a lure by the wake it leaves in the water, and it does so from close range.
What that means for the retrieve
Since the organ is short-range, a lure has to be worked past the fish, not just somewhere in the water body. In murk this means denser casts and a slower pace, not a louder lure: loudness doesn’t extend the lateral line’s range.
The size of the wake depends on the body
A wide paddle tail pushes more water than a slim minnow, and its wake is wider too. That’s why in dense murk you pick a bulky lure over a bright one — it’s exactly this channel doing the work there.
What we don’t write here
We don’t give exact distances in metres for specific species. Data of that kind comes from a handful of species tested in a tank, and carrying it over to a pike in the reeds would be pure invention.
