Monofilament: stretch as an advantage
Monofilament is a single continuous strand drawn from polymer. The simplest of all in construction and the longest in use; most anglers start with it.
Stretch works as a shock absorber
Mono stretches noticeably under load, and in doing so it soaks up what would otherwise reach the knot and the hook: a hard strike, a fish bolting under the bank, the jolt of casting a heavy rig.
That is why on fine rigs mono is often more reliable than braid that is stronger on paper: it gives where another material would simply pass the shock along.
The other side — muted feel
The same stretch eats weak signals. A light touch, the bottom, weed — mono absorbs part of all that, and less reaches your hand. At distance the effect grows: the more line is in the water, the more it stretches.
So where feeling the lure matters, braided line is taken more often.
Memory and behaviour on the spool
Mono remembers the shape it was wound in: after sitting on a spool it comes off in coils, and those coils hinder both casting and retrieving. The effect is called line memory, and it is stronger in some monos than others.
The practical consequence is simple: line that has sat on a reel for a season behaves differently from freshly spooled line, even if it looks intact.
Why people start with mono
It forgives more mistakes than any other material: stretch softens a hard strike, almost every knot holds on it, and respooling costs little. For a first setup that matters more than sensitivity a beginner cannot read yet.
It is not a „beginner's material": where cushioning and unobtrusive presentation are wanted, mono stays a working choice for experienced anglers too.
It ages on its own, without fishing
That is the main way mono differs from the rest of your kit in everyday keeping. Light, warmth and damp gradually change its properties, and line loses strength simply by lying somewhere warm.
So mono is not something to buy „for years ahead", and for that reason stocking up for future seasons is no economy here: the line reaches next spring already different from the one you bought. Storage is covered in Line care and storage.
