What Makes Ice Dangerous
Ice looks solid, and that's the main reason it's trusted. In reality it's uneven within a single body of water, even within a few steps, and the reason isn't thickness but how it froze.
Ice Freezes Differently
Clear ice forms from calm water in freezing temperatures and holds better. White ice forms from snow soaked with water — it's full of air bubbles and so is weaker at the same thickness. Both can occur on the same body of water, and the boundary between them isn't always visible.
Snow Isn't an Extra Layer, It's a Blanket
It doesn't add strength, it gets in the way of freezing. Under a thick layer of snow, ice is always thinner — this is one of the direct instructions from Ukraine's State Emergency Service. Fresh snowfall also adds weight from above, so it works both ways at once: insulating from below and loading from above.
Current Keeps Ice From Setting Evenly
Moving water carries away heat and erodes ice from underneath. That's why the service lists river confluences and stretches with fast current among the places to avoid. Thickness there can mean nothing: it's eaten away from below faster than it builds up from above.
Heat Frozen Into the Ice
Boards, sticks, and any object frozen into the ice are named by the service as a separate sign. They conduct heat differently than ice does and leave a weak zone around themselves, and their very presence often means the surface was already disturbed.
Weight Matters Less Than How It's Spread
The same person standing and the same person lying down load the ice differently, and the entire rescue protocol is built on exactly this: the first move at the sound of a crack is to lie down, not run. Many holes in one spot, and a group of people on a small patch, are the same distribution mistake, just made in advance.
Why We Don't Name a Thickness
Because a number doesn't describe any of this, which is why different services give different figures, or none at all. The service frames it as a ban on going out onto ice whose thickness and strength are unknown. Our signs and gear describe the same thing — but in a way that's checked on the spot, not matched against someone else's standard.
