How a jigging minnow swims
One cycle of a jigging minnow is a lift, a swing out to the side, a turn, and a return to under the hole. What catches fish isn't the lift itself but what happens after it, and that's why you stop your hand on purpose.
What happens after the lift
A sharp upward move breaks the lure loose, and it runs forward and sideways for as long as it has speed. Then the water presses against the fin, the lure turns, and it comes back toward vertical — often looping as it does. On the line this feels like a short bit of slack, then a light bump: that pair of signals is what tells you the lure has finished the arc.
The lift sets the width
A short lift gives a narrow arc right at the hole; a long, sharp one gives a wide arc. This is the main adjustment your hand controls: the lure stays the same, but the area it covers changes many times over.
Slack line is essential
If you keep the line taut after the lift, the lure comes back on a short arc and effectively hangs under the rod tip. The action comes from letting it run free: you lower the tip along with the lure and let it finish the arc.
The pause is part of the move
After it settles back, the lure keeps swinging in place a while longer. This leftover movement is its own phase of the cycle, and cutting it off with another lift means showing the fish nothing but jerks. How long that pause runs is the first thing to adjust when the bites stop.
What kills the action
A heavy snap or swivel on the loop throws off the balance and shortens the arc. Thick line offers more resistance and does the same. The least visible cause is a knot tied to one side of the loop instead of dead centre: the lure then hangs crooked, and the arc comes up shorter on one side — the same fault a paint-clogged loop causes.
When the lure hooks itself
Jerk the rod harder than the line can follow, and the lure outruns it and catches the treble right above the loop. It then hangs sideways and doesn't work at all, and the only way to notice is by pulling it out of the hole. That's why you build up sharpness in steps, not together with length: lengthen the lift first, then sharpen it — and back off the moment the lure starts catching the line.
What the line shows you
In vertical fishing, the line is the only instrument you have: it shows both the slack after the lift and the moment the lure settles. So it's kept as thin as the fish allow, and kept from freezing to the edge of the hole — you can't read a lure's movement through a frozen line.
How to tie it on
A direct knot on the loop leaves the least extra hardware but slows you down when swapping lures. A small snap is more convenient, and that's exactly why it gets used more than it should: a snap should be the lightest one that still holds the fish, not the handiest one in the box.
