What is a jigging minnow

A jigging minnow is a cast body shaped like a small fish, hung from a loop on its back. In the water it sits horizontal, and everything else about the lure follows from that.

How it's built

The body is cast from a heavy metal and painted. A single hook is soldered into the nose and another into the tail, points facing outward. A treble hangs underneath, roughly under the centre of the body, on a split ring or a wire hanger. The tail carries a fin, most often plastic.

The loop in the middle is the key detail

Its position sets how the lure hangs and where it goes on the lift. A loop set forward drops the tail; set back, it drops the nose. This is a trait of the specific model, not something you tune on the ice: the loop is soldered in place and can't be moved, and bending it is delicate work — after which the lure needs checking all over again.

A tail that isn't a hook

The tail fin doesn't catch anything — it acts as a stabiliser and turns the lure on the way back down. A broken or bent fin changes the action before it's visible to the eye, which is why jigging minnows aren't tipped loose into a box with heavier lures.

Hooks you can't replace

The soldered hooks don't come off: if a point dulls or breaks, the lure gets sharpened or retired. Only the bottom treble is replaceable — it sits on a split ring and gets swapped with it, the same way as on a spoon.

What it's made of

The body is cast from lead or a lead-based alloy: the class needs weight packed into a small volume. Where anglers move away from lead, they use denser or harder metals — the difference between them is covered in the card on lead and its alternatives.

There's no cavity inside

The body is solid, and the lure's whole weight is the body itself. That makes a jigging minnow heavier than a hardbait of the same size, which has a hollow body inside, and it sinks faster and more evenly as a result.

What to check on a new one

Three things, all visible before it ever touches water: whether the lure hangs level when held by the loop, whether the bottom treble swings freely on its ring, and whether the loop is clogged with paint. A loop clogged with paint changes the action before the first drop into the hole: the knot sits crooked in it, and the lure only swings out to one side.

What shows on it

The finish works here as a silhouette and a patch of colour: under the ice there's little light, and a fish doesn't read pattern detail.
