Thickness and casting distance

One spoon can weigh twice what another of the same size does — the whole difference is in the thickness of the metal. And that difference decides both casting distance and how the lure behaves on the pause.

Thick casts further

More mass for the same surface area means less air resistance per unit of weight, so the lure casts further and more accurately, especially into the wind. It also sinks faster and reaches the bottom sooner, which saves retrieve time at depth.

Thin glides longer

A light plate of the same shape sinks slowly, rocking widely, and stays in the water column noticeably longer. But it casts worse: the wind simply blows it sideways.

It’s one trade-off, not two separate traits

Distance and glide time are bought one at the expense of the other, and there’s no third option. That’s why a box usually holds both: thick to reach the spot, thin to hold the lure in the right layer.

Wind and depth decide for you

In wind and at distance, thick wins; in shallow, clear water, thin does. It’s not a matter of taste: a lure that didn’t reach the spot doesn’t work at all, and one that shot through the working layer in a second never had time to show itself to the fish.

Weight has to match the rod’s rating

A heavy plate cast with a rod outside its rating either falls short or breaks the blank. A light one on a heavy rod doesn’t load it at all, and the cast comes up short — here, distance is limited by the tackle, not the lure.

Compare not by eye but by what’s printed: the lure’s weight in grams against the range marked on the plate itself and on the blank.

The same weight can come in different sizes

A thick, short plate and a thin, long one can weigh the same and look completely different in the water. So weight is judged together with size: one number on its own describes neither distance nor the character of the action. You can see it right in the box — two lures with the same figure on the packet sit side by side and look like different classes of lure, not two neighbouring models in the same line.

Thickness shows on the metal too

A thin plate is easier to bend by hand, and it deforms faster from pike teeth and rocks. Even a slightly bent spoon changes its action — so the shape is checked by eye, not from memory of what it used to be. The simplest way is to lay it on a flat surface next to an undamaged one of the same model: any deviation shows up right away.
