Why a spoon wobbles
A flat plate runs straight through the water. A spoon is curved, and it’s exactly that curve that makes it unstable: there’s no position it can settle into.
The mechanics of the wobble
The current pushes harder on the concave side than on the convex one. The plate turns, presents the other side to the flow, the pressure shifts — and it turns back. The cycle doesn’t stop as long as the lure keeps moving through the water.
Curve sets the amplitude
A sharply curved plate rocks wide and slow, an almost flat one rocks narrow and fast. It’s the same trade-off as with a hardbait’s lip: one shape can’t give both a wide swing and a high frequency at once.
Why it drifts off a straight line
Every roll shifts the lure sideways, so the track it leaves isn’t a straight line but a zigzag. That’s why a spoon covers a wider band of water than the line itself travels through — and it shows on a short retrieve along the bank.
Speed has two limits
Too slow and the plate doesn’t rock at all — it just drags along on its side. Too fast and it spins out, meaning it starts turning around its own axis and twisting the line the way a spinner does.
The working range between these two limits is what you look for on the first few casts. It’s different for every model and isn’t printed on the packet: you retrieve the lure along the bank in clear water and watch at what speed the steady wobble begins, and at what speed it breaks down. Both limits are worth knowing before the lure goes down to depths where you can’t see it.
Line tension changes the fall
On slack line the plate falls almost straight down, on a tight line it swings in an arc toward the angler. These are two different falls, and fish react to them differently, so tension on the pause is held on purpose, not left to chance. On slack line a take is also neither seen nor felt — it only shows up on the next lift, by which time the fish has already spat the metal out.
A bent plate has a different action
Pike teeth and rocks change the curve, and after that the lure starts running on its side or spinning out at the speed that worked before. The curve is corrected by hand, compared against an undamaged spoon of the same model — you can’t see the difference by eye.
The fall is part of the action too
Released without tension, the plate glides, still rocking, and that’s often exactly where it gets taken. Unlike hardbait buoyancy classes, there’s nothing to tune here: the glide is built into the shape.
