Braid strand count
Almost every braid carries a number with an X on the packet — X4, X8, sometimes X12. That is the number of strands woven into the line, and nothing else: not the strength, not a grade, not a generation.
The number sets the shape of the cross-section
Four strands will not make a round rope — the cross-section comes out closer to a square. The more strands there are, the closer it gets to a circle: each additional strand fills the gap between its neighbours.
That is geometry, not a property of the material. The strands in an X4 and an X8 may be identical — all that changes is how many parts the same area is divided into.
What actually follows from it
An angular braid runs more noisily through the guides — you hear it and feel it in the hand. A round one runs quieter and lies more evenly on the spool. Both effects are observable, which is exactly why they are worth naming: you can check them without taking anyone's word.
«X8 is stronger», on the other hand, does not follow from the number. Strength comes from the material of the strands and the density of the weave, and the maker states it on a line of its own. Comparing braids by strand count is like comparing reels by the number of bearings.
The coating is a separate thing
Some braids are impregnated with a compound that binds the strands together and makes the surface slick. A fresh coated braid behaves like a round one whatever its strand count; as the coating wears off, the underlying shape begins to show.
Hence an observation that surprises many: braid gets noisier with age. That is not the line worn out — that is the coating gone.
The colour is on the surface too
Braid is dyed on the outside, and the dye rubs off against the guides just as the coating does. A faded braid is not a worn one — these are two separate processes that simply run alongside each other.
You check it by feel and against the light rather than by colour: frayed strands and fuzz over the first few metres, that is wear. What to do about it — line care and storage.
The number does not compare across makers
One maker's X8 and another's are not the same thing: the number says how many parts the cross-section is divided into and says nothing about how thick those parts are. Two braids with the same marking can differ in every property at once.
So the marking works within one range, where the rest of the specification is shared, and stops working between ranges. It is the same trap as the size number on spinning reels.
