What is braided line
Braided line is bought for one property: it does not stretch. Everything else on this page follows from that, including the reasons braid on its own does not work and needs something added to it.
What it is made of
Braid is not a single thread but a bundle of several fibres woven together. The materials used are polyethylene, Dacron and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (sold under the trade names Spectra and Dyneema).
The maker prints the number of fibres on the packet: four, eight and twelve are the usual ones. That figure is visible on any spool in a shop, and it is the first thing worth looking at.
The main property is the absence of stretch
Compared with ordinary nylon monofilament, braid has a small diameter, high strength and no stretch. Mono, by contrast, extends under load.
The practical consequence is simple. A bite at range reaches the hand without fading: what feels like a vague nudge on mono is distinct on braid. For the same reason the strike works over the whole length of the cast, not only close in.
The other side of the same property
The stretch of mono is not a fault but a job: it absorbs the load on the strike and while playing a fish. Braid has no such damper at all.
So a sharp lunge at the bank or the boat side is not softened by anything — the whole force arrives at once on the rod, the knot and the fish’s mouth. This is compensated not by the braid but by the rest of the tackle: a softer tip, a lighter drag setting and a mono or fluorocarbon leader on the end.
Which means the property braid is bought for and the property that stops it being fished bare are the same one.
The knot
For braided lines the Palomar knot is the recommendation: it suits fine lines, is named specifically as suitable for braided Dacron, and retains almost all of the line’s original strength.
That matters more than it sounds: the strength of the tackle is set not by the braid but by its weakest point, and that is usually the knot.
Where braid belongs
Where you need to feel the bottom and a bite at distance: a spinning rod worked across a current, a feeder on a long cast.
Where softening the lunge matters more than hearing the touch, the advantage of mono becomes an advantage rather than a shortcoming.
What we do not write here
Precise figures circulate about braid — stretch percentages, abrasion comparisons, casting distances. We do not repeat them: we found no verified source for those numbers, and a plausible figure in a reference is worse than no figure at all.
